Canon Vs Nikon - Digital SLR Camera Comparison

canon lenses

It is imperative to understand the technology of DSLR cameras before contrasting the differences between to models.

Compare digital SLR cameras of Canon and Nikon

These are not just simple 'point and shoot' units. The DSLR, short for Digital Single Lens reflex gives users the ability to make the picture turn out the exact same as what is seen through the eye lens, or viewfinder.

In the 'point and shoot' units, the scene depicted in the viewfinder is not the same as what come through the primary lens. The viewfinder portion is not indicate of final product in traditional digital cameras. Therefore, in the DSLR cameras, the images are the same. Therefore, the photo taker will be able to take a picture that will turn out the same as what is seen through the viewfinder. This visualization makes picture taking much easier and more accurate.

There are three basic categories for both Canon and Nikon for SLR digital categories. Beginning with the amateur level machines, the Canon Rebel XS (1000D) and also the Nikon D60 fall into that category. There are many differences between the Rebel XS and Nikon D60. If you have older Canon lenses you want to use with it, the Nikon D60 will work with most of them; while the older Nikon lenses may not work with the Nikon D60.

The next category of these cameras is for more professional use. These are usually larger and more expensive. They require some expertise to use effectively. Cameras that fall into this category are the Canon Rebel T1i 500D as well as the Nikon D 5000. The Canon Rebel T1i and the D5000 are actually very similar in their capabilities; although the ISO range varies. The D5000 range is 100-6400 while the T1i has a larger range of 100-12800.

Finally, there is another category to compare digital SLR cameras. They fuse together several of the features from each of the previous categories. These can be used by amateur photographers who want to take more professional quality pictures. In this category, the Nikon D300 and Canon 50D would meet those needs. These are both really good cameras and are almost identical in their features. There are a few subtle differences; the Canon is actually lighter at 29 oz than the Nikon at 32.6 oz. Also, the ISO range is slightly different; the Canon ISO boasts 100-12800 where the Nikon range is 100-6400.

Canon EOS Rebel T1i EF-S Digital SLR Camera - Consider These Extras For Shooting Convenience

canon lenses

Congratulations - you decided to get a Canon EOS Rebel T1i EF-S Digital SLR Camera. Let's say you're getting the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens.

What else do you absolutely need to start shooting?
What items are recommended specifically for this camera?
What are the nice-to-have items?

Essential Equipment After The Camera and The Lens
o SDHC Card, preferably SanDisk* brand (for video)
o SD Card (for stills)
o SD/SDHC Card Reader (to transfer the videos and photos to your PC)
o Lithium-Ion battery
o Battery Charger

* The SanDisk SDHC card was recommended by an Amazon reviewer as the best video card for this camera.

Recommended Equipment
The Canon EOS Rebel T1i EF-S Digital SLR Camera uses 20% more power than the previous Rebel, the XSi. To make sure you have sufficient battery power, especially for videos, get the following items:
o At least one other Lithium-Ion battery
o A battery pack grip that allows you to use two Lithium batteries as well as AA batteries if the Lithium's dissipate.

Now that you have all these accessories, a camera bag is also recommended. There is a wide selection of carrying cases available on the Internet. Make sure it accommodates the T1i and will hold Canon lenses.

Nice-To-Have Stuff
o A super flash - the 580EX II Speedlite is the best all-purpose flash, but there are cheaper models that will suffice.
o Another lens (telephoto, wide angle) to meet your needs. The Canon EOS Rebel T1i EF-S Digital SLR Camera is compatible with over 60 Canon EF/EF-S lenses. These lenses maximize the T1i's performance.

The Sigma 20mm f/1.8 D EX DG Aspherical Lens has a clutch-like system for switch between AF and MF modes. The system is very similar to the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX macro lens I reviewed previously. You push the manual focus ring forward to disengage the focus ring for auto-focusing. For manual focusing, you pull it toward you to engage the clutch. When the ring is set to AF, you can rotate the focusing ring all you want, you won't change the focus on the lens. When the lens is auto-focusing, it also doesn't effect the position of the manual-focusing ring. The manual focus ring is wide so there is no chance that you'll miss it in operation.

Cinema 5D Quick Take: Chrosziel HDSLR AKS

Here is a quick take on some accessories from Chrosziel for HDSLR work. The Baseplate itself has a little lip attachment that prevents the camera from shifting. The camera tie down is a huge blue knob for easy access. The matte box has a great rubber bellows that will work with multiple lenses. It's a carbon fiber look which is strange but true. It's not really carbon fiber. Chrosziel makes some great stuff for HDSLR work. Thanks for cheking it out.

Why And How To Choose Lenses: PART 3

This is a continuation of PART 2 which was on aesthetic properties of lenses. In this part, I talk a bit on perspective distortion which is the different looks a photo has depending on the distance to the subject and also about different renditions of color and contrast of lenses. There are no rules in photography. While many people can use one lens for one task, you don't have to do the same. Some people do more work in the camera while others in an image editing program. The Best & Worst Digital Camera Telephoto Lenses of 2009

canon lenses

Before showering praise or criticism on any specific telephoto lens, it may be worthwhile to expel a few words on exactly what a camera telephoto lens is, and what it does.

In a nutshell, a telephoto lens brings the subject targeted by the photographer, closer to that said photographer. And as a result, produces a still photograph or video for any subsequent viewers that is larger, more detailed and exhibits greater clarity then could have been achieved without the benefit of an additional lens. A somewhat more technical definition would be a lens that is built from a rather long focal length lens, but where the actual tangible length of this lens is less than the desired focal length. That is not to suggest, that every lens with a longer focal length than normal is a true telephoto lens. A true telephoto lens will contain a combination of rear lenses ofter referred to as the telephoto group.

There are a few points to consider when buying a digital camera telephoto lens.

It's important to know what camera or cameras, you intend to use the lens with. Different makes, models, and manufacturers often have their own lens mounting systems. Some maybe simple screw lenses, while others may have more elaborate mounting mechanisms.

Consider the subject environment you will be shooting in. While telephoto lens lend themselves to specific types of subjects, such as sporting events, wildlife photography, surveillance work and landscape vistas, that's not to suggest that they aren't also used for fashion or wedding photography.

If you never used a zoom lens much in the past, then sales staff can be an invaluable resource. They handle this type of equipment on a daily basis, are often more than will to share their opinions. They may be somewhat biased, especially if their working on commission, so be sure to take what they say with a grain of salt. A good source of unbiased information can be found online. The more reputable online sites like Amazon, contain tons of real users who often share their product experience in online reviews.

Reading manuals for the specific models can be helpful as well. Most manufacturers these days, place their product manuals online in PDF form. If you Google around a bit online, you should be able to find the manual of the product your looking for.

Now speaking of the better lens I and a number of happy customers would recommend are:

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
This lens is great for anyone who wants to try out a L-series lens in the 10-200 mm focal length range, and not spend a whole ton of money. At the time of writing this, I'm finding this lens for under $600. Additionally, if your tired of hauling around the much heavier 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, this may be a better lens for you. Remember, this lens doesn't include IS, so that may or may not be a deal breaker for you.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

If money is less important than the quality of your photographs, then it may be time to step up to this lens. It goes for around $1700 new, or a couple hundred less used. It does however include image stabilization, which is important if a tripod is not an option for your photo shoots.

Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

Some of the things to really like about this lens, include the remarkable sharpness and clarity. An auto focus that is both darn near silent, and fast. Also included is a dual image stabilization system. It is on the downside of course a heavy lens, which I'm sure your well aware of, if you've been doing your research with other telephoto lenses in this category.

Get A Canon EF Macro Lens - Quality With Diversity

canon lenses

Macro photography is just way cool. And it is not really that hard to get super quality images, especially when you partner your Canon digital SLR with the right Canon ef macro lens.

Which lens is right for you?

First of all, you can actually take macro shots with many different lenses, but a true close up lens has special construction methods to allow you to get up personal with your subject, whether it be a flower, an insect, or someone's eyeball. The measurement that experts go by is a 1 to 1 magnification, and some go much higher.

What you see when you take a close up shot is not always what you expect. Many times you get some really pleasant surprises. For example, I was shooting a photo of a lacewing butterfly dining on a zinnia flower, and when I uploaded the picture to my computer, I was surprised and excited to see that I had also gotten two tiny little insects mating. I had not even seen them on the plant. And this happens all the time.

In addition, I am always thrilled with the detail when shooting with my macro lenses. I do take lots of pictures of nature, especially flowers and insects. There are so many "OMG" moments. For instance, when I see the itty bitty hairs on a fly's face and legs, I just have to wonder at the awesome creation that very few of us are aware of being around us.

If you are considering getting into this type of photography, you will not be disappointed with the results. The pictures you take will keep you coming back for more.

As far as focal length is concerned, Canon ef macro lenses come in several shapes and sizes ranging from 50mm up to 180mm. And, as you might guess, the longer the length the higher the price tag. With one exception, which is the Canon MP-E 65mm which is a very special lens (don't go there for your first macro lens).

The shortest focal length is 50mm. There are several 50mm lenses, but only one is a designated macro lens, so be aware that the cheapest 50mm lens is not the one you want for close up photography.

Most popular among this category lens is the 100mm. It comes with built-in quality and awesomeness. It has the magic of close-up that will delight you every time.

And then there is the MAC-daddy 180mm lens. Again, you will have no regrets.

One of the great things about all of these lenses is the image quality. They are prime, meaning single focal length, lenses. This makes is easier for the engineers to get excellent quality without having to deal with maintaining quality over the zoom range of the lens.

My personal recommendation is to stick with a prime lens for your close-up work. There are many zoom lenses that claim to be macro, and that is fine if you want the flexibility of zoom, but their main function is not for close-up photography.

Did I mention that these lenses are also capable of excellent portraits? They are. It is one of the added benefits you get with any Canon ef macro lens, except the MP-E 65mm.

Tokina AF 10-17mm Fisheye DX Lens Canon-Nikon Review

www.microglobe.co.uk Sharpness isnt a prime concern in this type of lens of course, but with the Tokina 10-17mm fisheye Ive got no complaints as far as sharpness goes. Distortions, well whats the point of talking about that, its meant to be distorted so its no bad thing this time. I really like this little lens, its well made and lets me take unusual shots that can be highly appreciated by the couple. Its not a lens that should be added to your bag when first starting out as there are probably several others youll need before getting to unusual lenses that will not be used often like this. If you are looking for a fisheye though, I think this Tokina 10-17mm is a great, unique piece and well worth a look.

L1) CANON 100MM F/2.8 MACRO USM EF

Read More Full Content...

There are plenty of rave reviews about this lens. I'd like to add something from my experience using it for 2+ years. Sharp is right, but more important - little or no distortion. And great color resolution. Photographing artwork, this is critical. This lens is nearly perfect. If you don't know what this means, take a photograph of a piece of graph paper. On most lenses (and yes even L series) you'll see the outer lines converging in or out. If this is a painting - a rectangle, guess what, outer areas are distorted and lose sharpness. Sure you can correct in Photoshop, but any stretching - and I mean any stretching loses sharpness. Have I made my point?

Here is a surprise that I learned on this lens, smaller aperture is not always sharper. What? Didn't they tell us in photo class the bigger the number the sharper the photo? Not true. There is light distortion at small openings. Here's the sweet spot in my experience: f5.6 to f7 (1/3 less than 8). Higher, you get greater depth of field which you sometimes MUST have, but sharpness drops gradually until somewhere past f11, then way down. I'm using strobes, so not really an issue (plenty of light).

Focus - sometimes tough as others have mentioned. You have to be patient and have good eyesight. I don't even bother with the autofocus on this lens. A breath will take you out of focus. And I'm working on a tripod. At the beginning of every project, I just kind of accept that I shoot a photo, run into the the office, put the card into the computer and check it on Photoshop before I continue. Bummer, but that's the deal with this lens.

Distance from the art. If you photograph large work, as I do sometimes, you'll need some room. A six foot painting will put you back about 16 feet. An eight foot painting will put you about 25 feet. That's a big studio (remember you still have to get your body behind the camera). I've got a 50mm sigma macro for the big ones that does an excellent job, but I always miss this one.

Bottom line - GREAT lens for photographing flat artwork. AMAZING lens for photographing small products like jewelry (you swear you're looking at the molecules sometimes). Take your time and use the lens the way it was meant, and you will never be sorry. Oh yeah - you have to own the lens hood, it should have come with it, it's so important.

Ps. Macro photography is just fun. Every once in awhile you have to take a picture of something very small to marvel at it blown up to king sized proportions.

Photographs of Birds in Kenya and Tanzania, January-February 2010

I took these photographs in Kenya and Tanzania while on a photography tour. There are too many species to list here but included are three different kinds of eagle, vultures, ostriches, smaller birds, and an owl. I took these pictures with my Canon EOS 5D Mark II and 7D SLRs. The lenses I used most of the time were the Canon L-series 100-400mm zoom and the Canon 500mm F4 prime. I developed the pictures in Adobe Lightroom 2.5 and Photoshop Elements 7.0. I used the Topaz Adjust and Topaz Detail 2.0 plug-ins to enhance some of the pictures.

Camera Lenses

canon lenses

Photography is undoubtedly one of the most important inventions in history--it has truly altered how people conceive the world. Now, we can see everything clearly, including that which is actually many miles or years away from us. Photography lets us encapsulate moments in time and conserve them for years to come.

When selecting a lens, make sure it fits your camera, as not all lenses fit all cameras. Even if you change to a newer model of the same manufacturer's camera, the old lens may not work. If the lens has an electric zoom, iris, and maybe even focus, these functions could be powered and controlled by a multi-wire cable that connects between the lens and the camera. Therefore, getting the right signals and voltages from the camera to the lens makes it a tricky matter.

Lenses are described by focal length, usually telling you the lens' widest image angle and the zoom ratio. The focal length measured in millimeters is number derived from a mathematical formula.

If you need to shoot in humid climates, keep your camera and lens sealed securely. Let the two warm up to outside temperatures before you use them. This prevents condensation from forming on your gear. If dampness gets inside your lens, fungus starts to grow and it is nearly impossible to remove.

Choosing a lens for your camera can be one of the toughest decisions to make, especially if your camera is a specialized one. If you want to capture a lot of activity you will not be able to identify minute details at a far away distance. Conversely, while using a lens or lens setting to capture close-up pictures from a distance you must sacrifice a lot of horizontal coverage. Therefore, it is essential to choose the perfect lens for your purposes and camera.

The PowerShot SX30 IS features Smart Auto, Scene Detection, which uses technology to identify the shooting conditions and select the optimal settings of 28 scenes. Smart Flash Exposure controls the camera's flash output to ensure proper exposure of the subjects.

An optional adapter lets you mount filters as the polarizer 67 mm Canon PL-C B, while flash drives are supported without additional adapters. The support for SDHC memory cards and SDXC provides high storage capacity.

Canon PowerShot SX30 IS will be available starting in October, the target price of $420.

One of the most important accessories for each lens you own. A lens hood provides multiple functions: it shades the lens from stray light, improving your contrast and image quality; in inclement weather, it can assist in keeping moisture or wind-blown debris off the lens; and it protects the front barrel from the inevitable impacts against walls, door frames, and other real-life obstacles. Almost all EF and TS-E lenses have a Canon lens hood engineered specifically for it.

I love the Canon 50 mm f/1.4 Lens. It performs wonderfully and lives on my camera much of the time.

Reasons to buy any hood:
1. Protects the glass from your oily fingers when you reach for the camera. (I prefer not to use a UV filter - ghosting/degradation/etc)
2. Sacrifices itself rather than the front element if you drop the lens
3. Prevents lens flare (disclaimer: hasn't been an issue for me)

Reasons to buy THIS hood:
1. Black Matte interior on the inside of the hood that Canon applies is not found on 3rd party hoods
2. Fits lens appropriately, can be installed forward or backward
3. Holds value when combined with this exceptionally popular lens

Online Digital Photography Guide - Canon 550D DSLR Feature Overview

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The Canon 550D DSLR camera includes many significant improvements over the Canon 500D: Better HD motion video, an 18 Megapixel image sensor, and an improved metering system akin to that of the Canon 7D model.

The 18MP Image Sensor
Image quality of the new Canon 550D is superior to that of previous models - jumping from 12MP to 15MP and finally to an incredible18MP. Partnered with this is the company's latest DIGIC 4 image processor, and the final result is an incredible combination of processing speed, accuracy, and image resolution.

The iFCL Metering System
The Canon 550D incorporates the iFCL or Focus, Coloring and Luminance metering system. This system measures and analyses focus, color, and luminance data from 63 zones simultaneously which provides greatly enhanced metering accuracy and consistency over previous models of the line. This is also the same metering system which is used in the Canon 7D semi-professional camera.

The High Definition Motion Video
The 550D is much improved in the HD motion video department, as compared to the predecessor 500D especially when shooting at 720p and 1080p. A nice feature is full control over the frame rate which allows you to capture very fast moving images by manual adjustment of the frame rate.

The Low Light ISO Improvements
The 550D includes a standard ISO range of up to 6400. This range can be expanded up to 12800 for use in low light situations where it may not be allowed or desirable to use flash lighting. This increased ISO range along with the DIGIC 4 image processor makes for minimum graininess in the output image.

The New Movie Crop Feature - Standard Definition With The Same Lens
A new movie crop function lets you shoot motion video at standard definition with up to 7x effective zoom. This is done by using only the center area of the image sensor, and it is very handy for instances where you do not have time or may not wish to change lenses.

The Improved LCD Screen
Canon has improved the LCD screen on the 550D over that of previous models too. The screen size is still a very respectable 3 inches, but offers increased resolution and overall clarity which in turn allows you to better see important details in your images as you shoot. The result is better composition ability.

The Strong Product Line
Canon has made a great camera - the 500D - even better. And the new 550D is fully compatible with EF and EF-S series lenses so that your existing lenses may still be used. It is also compatible with the EX-Speedlite series of flash accessories. Add to this the features discussed above and the 550D becomes a very attractive & worthwhile upgrade.

24mm wide angle lens for Canon cameras

Read More Full Content...

I was on the lookout for a good-quality autofocus wide angle lens for my Canon 5D MkII, and this seemed to be the best option. Canon's telephoto lenses are generally superb and they make some good zooms, but the company has traditionally had trouble with the wider focal lengths. I can't justify the expense of a 24-70mm f/2.8 or the 24mm f/1.4, and the 17-40mm and 16-35mm seem either underwhelming or too specialised for what they are. The 28-135mm didn't appeal to me, ditto the 20-35mm f/3.4-4.5, the 24-85mm didn't impress me when I owned a copy. The non-L wide primes include the 20mm f/2.8, which no-one seems to like; the 35mm f/2, which lots of people like but doesn't seem great in the full-frame corners; the 28mm f/2.8, which I have tried and hated, and the 28mm f/1.8, which doesn't appeal to me at all. The 24mm f/2.8 seemed to be the dark horse, based on the tests I have seen, and so I found one cheap and snapped it up.

It is surprisingly good. Not excellent, but sufficient. I already have a very good 24mm, an old Olympus 24mm f/2.8 that I use with an adapter, and although Canon's lens isn't quite as sharp it's more practical to use, on account of it having autofocus and an automatic aperture. I don't have to keep checking live view when I focus closer than infinity. I like the 24mm focal length, and with a 5D MkII I can always crop down to something approximating 35mm without too much loss of resolution.

Physically it's a solid unit that doesn't rotate or extend. It doesn't feel weak and I have subsequently thrust it into bags and taken it out and about without breaking it. The autofocus is buzzy but the focus travel is very short, so it's not a problem. The manual focus ring is dire and I have only used it when shooting video. Canon gives you front and rear caps but no hood, the meanies.

Optically it's close to very good. At f/8, f/11 it's sharp across the frame almost but not quite into the extreme corners, far better than the 28mm f/2.8 that I briefly owned. There is CA, but DPP will correct this. There is some barrel distortion, but it's not very noticeable and not offensive, and this is one thing the lens has over the 24-105mm f/4 (the other being that it's much smaller and lighter - in the end I went on holiday with this lens and a 50mm, and the combination was smaller and faster than the 24-105mm). Vignetting exists and is inescapable on a 5D MkII, this is the major optical weakness. At f/2.8 it remains sharp in the centre. The background blur is busy and it's not really a bokeh-licious lens. You, sir, are no 24mm f/1.4.

Drawbacks? The very extreme outer corners are always mushy but, having said that, outside the world of Carl Zeiss every wide angle lens seems to have this problem. On an APS-C camera it would be sharp but redundant, because your kit lens is probably just as sharp and also wider and it has image stabilisation. The other problem is the price, which is too high. If Canon reworked the lens, added USM, sharpened it up a bit more, they could justify this price, but I suspect they will simply discontinue it in favour of the 24mm f/1.4. Which is a shame, because it is otherwise a bit of a hidden gem.

Canon SLR Lens Overview - EF-S 17mm - 85mm F-4.0-5.6 USM IS Image Stabilized Autofocus Zoom Lens

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The EF-S series of lenses, by Canon, are exceptional lenses applicable for Canon digital SLR cameras such as: the EOS 20D and Rebel models. Why? The key design feature aims to match the APS-C imaging sensor with the image circle. How? This matching objective is achieved by reducing distance between the rear of the lens and the focal plane, thus decreasing the size of the image circle.

The result? Canon's EF-S lenses are more efficient in terms of: weight and cost of wide-angle lenses while ensuring superior image quality, resolution and contrast at all focal lengths.

As a member of the EF-S family of lenses, the 17-85 F4 IS USM is a strong performing wide-angle to telephoto lens. Its list of features include: Image Stabilization for hand-held situations; and is optically optimized for the digital SLR camera; a ring-type USM designed for fast and silent auto focus. The full-time manual focus in AF mode is also a useful addition.

The EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens provides a 5x zoom ratio and an angle of view equivalent to a 27-136mm lens on a 35mm camera. Also present in this lens is a glass-molded aspherical lens element with aspherical surfaces on both sides. The result, superb image quality through the full zoom range. The focusing distance is impressive at a distance of 12 inches at all focal lengths. Finally, the EF-S 17-85mm IS lens, when compared to the EF 28-135mm IS lens, is 5% shorter and 12% lighter, and accepts 67mm filters.

Canon Portrait Lens - A Great Portrait Lens Pays Dividends

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you have thought about doing portraits with your Canon EOS digital SLR camera, you are not alone. Portraiture may be the most popular photography applications pursued by amateurs and pros alike.

You might be surprised to know that having the perfect Canon portrait lens is not the most critical part of getting a great portrait. But a good lens will definitely go a long way toward getting you to that great image.

Being a portrait photographer can truly be a pretty glamorous career. If you get good at it, you could be photographing the very famous people. And you would be dong it in a very different way than the paparazzi, who are not very well thought of in the photography business. Besides, what they do is not portrait photography.

Most portrait photographers are not shooting famous people though. There is plenty of work in the field that does not include actors, singers, and other glitzy individuals.

There is the individual portrait opportunity, family portraits, high school senior photos, babies, and even pet portraits. So there is no shortage of opportunities.

Depth Of Field - Your #1 Goal

As a portrait photographer, the portrait lens is as important as the camera you attach it to. You will want your portraits to have certain qualities that make the model or subject a very special part of the picture. The first thing you want is a narrow depth of field. This means that the plane of focus is shallow, putting the other objects in the photograph out of focus. This brings the viewer's eyes right to the subject.

Great portrait lenses accomplish this shallow depth of field by allowing the picture to be taken with a very quick shutter speed. This is accomplished by having a wide aperture, usually f/2.8 or wider. In fact, the better lenses have apertures as wide as f/1.2. The result of using a wide aperture is that you get a depth of field that is far more sleek and sexy. Your subject will love their picture (and you). And you will feel like you accomplished a portrait that could go head to head against the pros.

What Focal Length?

Another feature you will want as a portrait photo shooter is the right focal length lens. The majority of photographers who do portrait work use a single or prime focal length, meaning the lens does not zoom at all. You can employ a lens that has a 50mm length, but that is the absolute shortest that you should use. Any shorter and you have to get too close to your subject. A better focal length is somewhere between 75mm and 150mm. This gives the photographer a better combination of depth of field, distance from the subject, and flexibility in choosing the perspective.

Using a lens that is too short will create unpleasant facial feature exaggerations, like the ears will be too large for the head. Everyone has seen those images of the cows where the cow's nose looks way out of proportion when compared to the rest of the animal. That is done on purpose, of course, using a wide angle lens (less than 50mm) and getting too close to the subject. It's a humorous shot, but not one that a high school senior would appreciate in their final yearbook.

There are also lots of photographers who use zoom lenses for portraits. One of the most popular is the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 zoom lens. You can imagine how much flexibility a lens like that will give you as you set up your shot.

The good news is that just about any lens can double as a portrait lens. If you know how to pull it off, you can take great portraits with you cell phone.

A Little Trick To Get Better Backgrounds

Depth of field has been mentioned as one of the things that can make your portrait special. A trick you can try is to move your model or subject farther away from the background. In other words, put as much distance as you can between the model and the background. This will put the background out of focus and compensate for the lack of a wide aperture.

Most of your friends and family think that you can take great portraits if you own a Digital SLR camera. Truth is, you can. But if you want to do even better, get yourself a great portrait lens.
